abstract = "One of the oldest mysteries in geomagnetism is the linkage between
solar and geomagnetic activity. In 1852, it was first noted that
both the numbers of sunspots and geomagnetic storms at Earth have
an 11 year cycle. A few years later, it was noted that a large
magnetic storm followed the great September 1859 solar flare and a
causal relationship between flares and storms was speculated. It
was not until this century that a well-accepted statistical survey
on large solar flares and geomagnetic storms was performed. The
results indicated that a significant correlation between flares
and geomagnetic storms exist.",
